Potroom Re-Org Update

Late Wednesday April 2nd in the afternoon the Company called a meeting with the Union to inform us that over the weekend they were going to start the process of talking to employees about temporarily assigning people to positions within the new organizational structure.

These are temporary assignments as per Article 10 of the Collective Agreement and not permanent placements.

The following information was also conveyed to the Union:

Union does not condone or sanction an overtime ban

On Monday, March 16, 2009 the Company announced the implementation of the re-organization of Lines 1 - 8 with or without the endorsement of the Focus Groups or the Union.

The Focus Groups and the Company discontinued talking Thursday, March 12, 2009 with the Company saying they are implementing their own agenda. Your Union is well aware that our members are not happy with the Company’s agenda and the fact that they are rolling it out Monday without the endorsement from the Union or its Focus Groups.

RIOTINTO ALCAN PUTS COST SAVINGS AHEAD OF SAFETY IN LINE 1-8 RE-ORGANIZATION

If you have had the chance to read the Company’s Ingot Spot News, Lines 1-8 Reorganization then you have experienced and excellent example of “Company BS” and we don’t mean behaviour base safety.

The closest the Company came to fulfilling their obligations under 26-LU-#5 of the CLA was the creation of the focus group. The process went down hill as time went on. It appears the Company entered into this process with a structure designed to reduce 16 positions from Lines 1 to 8 and justification was not required as far as they were concerned.

UPDATE #2 ON LINES 1 TO 8 RESTRUCTURING MEETINGS

The Union Committee and Company have had a number of face-to-face meetings since January 29th, 2009 (as per Article 26-LU-#5).

Right from the beginning the Union was very clear in stating that any proposed change that reduced Union jobs or positions would have to be completely justified.

  • As per Article 20.01(a) it is the Company’s responsibility to make adequate provisions for the safety and health of employees during the hours of employment.
