NEGOTIATIONS BULLETIN # 13
The CAW Negotiations Committee is happy to announce that we have reached a tentative agreement with Rio Tinto Alcan. This weekend was a critical time with the expiry of our contract on July 23rd. The parties negotiated a marathon session lasting 29 hours leading to the tentative agreement on Tuesday July 24th at noon.
The Bargaining Committee has been meeting since 7:00 a.m., July 23. As of 10:30 a.m. today, July 24, we are optimistic that a tentative agreement will be reached. CAW members are asked to report to work as they normally would and to be patient while we try to work out the details of the new agreement.

RESULTS OF STRIKE MANDATE VOTE
IN FAVOUR OF A STRIKE
Sisters & Brothers: Thank you for this strong mandate. Your Committee will ensure that with your support shown through giving the Union the right to strike that the Company will be forced to address your directive given to the Committee to secure jobs for the membership now and in the future.
The Union has called for a “Strike Vote” to be held over two meetings on Thursday and Friday this week – July 19th and 20th. Your Negotiations Committee requires a strong mandate from you the Membership if we are going to achieve the best possible contract.
There will be two meetings held as follows:
PLACE: MOUNT ELIZABETH SECONDARY SCHOOL
DATE: THURSDAY, JULY 19, 2012
Labour Board Applications
As mentioned in our last bulletin, the Union had been advised of two Labour Board applications that were going to be put in. The day after being notified, RTA filed an application for an “Essential Services” order and Bechtel filed an application for a “Common Site” order.
In recent weeks there have been contract settlements at Alma, Quebec and Trail, B.C which are of particular interest to our Union as we work towards a new collective agreement. We have been gathering information from both the Unions involved to understand the terms agreed to. We are able to provide you with the following synopsis of some of the more interesting aspects of their agreements.
Negotiations are now well into Package #2 dealing with non-monetary demands. We started our first round in this package almost two weeks ago and as planned we stopped to deal specifically with the Kemano demands while Perry Minaker, the Kemano rep, was in town to take part.
